The model picker is the one part of an online face swap that can feel less obvious than it should. Robust, Balanced and Accurate all sound good. They are not quality levels where the last option wins every time. Each one makes a slightly different tradeoff.

Balanced: the sensible first try

Balanced is the default because most photos do not need special treatment. A clear phone portrait, a profile picture, or a well-lit group photo usually gives it enough information to work with.

It is also the easiest model to judge. If the identity looks right but the edge needs work, keep the model and adjust the blending controls. If the eyes, mouth or face shape drift because the target is turned or partly covered, that is when switching to Robust makes sense.

Choose Balanced when:

  • both faces are reasonably sharp;
  • the target is facing forward or only slightly to the side;
  • you want a good result without testing every option;
  • you are checking several source faces and need a consistent starting point.

For many photos, Balanced is where the process ends.

Robust: for the photo you cannot easily replace

Some target photos are simply harder. The person may be looking over a shoulder, standing under side lighting, wearing glasses, or appearing relatively small in the frame. Robust is the model to try when Balanced loses the facial structure or puts features in the wrong place.

The name does not mean that it can rescue any image. A face hidden behind a hand or reduced to a few blurry pixels still gives the system very little to work with. Robust is most useful in the middle ground: the face is visible, but the angle, crop or light is less cooperative.

Choose Robust when:

  • the target face is turned farther from the camera;
  • one side of the face is much darker than the other;
  • glasses, hair or a mild obstruction cross part of the face;
  • Balanced produces a good identity but unstable eyes or mouth placement.

If Robust looks a little softer, do not immediately push the edge blur higher. First compare the facial placement at 100%. A softer face that sits correctly often looks more natural in the complete photo than a sharper face that is slightly misplaced.

Accurate: use good material and inspect the details

Accurate is meant for clean inputs where the small things matter: eyelids, lips, eyebrows and the shape around the nose. It is a good choice for a large portrait, a beauty shot, or an image that will be viewed close up.

It is less forgiving of a weak source photo. Compression, motion blur and heavy beauty filters can become part of what the model has to interpret. If Accurate produces a face that looks overly crisp, uneven or unlike the source, the first fix is usually a better source photo rather than another blending adjustment.

Choose Accurate when:

  • the source photo is sharp and evenly lit;
  • the target face takes up a useful part of the image;
  • the eyes and mouth are clearly visible;
  • you plan to inspect or publish the result at a larger size.

Accurate is worth trying after Balanced, especially when the Balanced result is already structurally correct and you only want to see whether more identity detail comes through.

The source photo matters more than the model name

Changing models cannot replace missing information. Before running the same swap three times, check the source face:

  1. Use a real, sharp face. Screenshots of tiny social thumbnails tend to carry compression damage.
  2. Stay close to the target angle. A front-facing source is versatile, but a similar head angle often preserves the face better.
  3. Avoid hard shadows across the eyes and nose. Even light gives every model a cleaner identity reference.
  4. Skip heavy filters. Smoothed skin and enlarged eyes may be copied as identity details rather than ignored.

A better source photo usually makes a bigger difference than moving from one model to another.

A simple way to compare the three models

Upload one target photo and one source face, then run Balanced first. Look at the result at 100% and check four areas: eye position, mouth shape, jaw alignment and the transition near the cheeks or forehead.

If the face sits in the right place, keep Balanced or try Accurate for detail. If the structure slips on an angled or difficult target, try Robust. Change one thing at a time; if you switch the source photo, model and blending settings together, you will not know which change helped.

The Edge blur control softens the boundary between the generated face and the target. The Fusion area control changes how much of the generated face is used. Small adjustments are usually enough. A wide, blurry blend can hide an edge, but it can also wash out the face.
