Pick the right source face
This is the single biggest factor, and it's the one people rush. The photo you swap in should roughly match the shot you're swapping into. If your video is a straight-on talking-head clip, don't grab a source photo taken from the side at a weird angle. The closer the angle, lighting, and expression of your source face are to the target, the less the AI has to invent — and the less it invents, the more believable it looks.
A clean, front-facing, evenly lit photo is gold. A dim selfie with half the face in shadow will fight you the whole way.
Match the lighting
Lighting mismatch is the fastest way to give a swap away. If the original footage is warm and soft and your source face was shot under cold fluorescent light, your brain notices instantly even if it can't say why. You can't always control this, but when you can choose between two source photos, pick the one whose lighting is closer to your target scene.
Mind the motion
Stills are forgiving. Video is not. A face that looks flawless when paused can wobble or smear the moment the head turns quickly. If you're working with video, favor clips where the subject's movements are reasonably smooth, and check the result on the moving frames, not just a paused one.

Start with good footage
